  1. This Acer netbook is truly appealing due to its size and design. After a few months of use a major defect came to light: the AC/DC adapter ping needle inside the computer is connected to the computers main card, so apon breaking after light use it could not be fixed without a major investment of a new card, almost what the little machine cost to begin with. This is without a doubt a major flaw in design, which will keep this model very close to the trash bin, or in the repair shop on a permanent basis. I would not suggest its purchase. Acer and its affiliated workshops were quick to argue that this defect was not covered in its warranty, which made this defect even worse. Perhaps ACER should learn a lesson from Toyota instead of selling a model of pure LEMON. Beware.

Although I bought the same system at a non Amazon site, it is the same model number. For whatever reason, mine came with Windows 7 Starter Edition. Anyway, this system comes with its fair share of pre-installed software that I had to remove to free up memory. However, I still find it pretty slow. If I type a URL in IE8 (pre-installed), sometimes it takes a while to catch up. Review sites have said Netbooks are better with XP Home. Could be. Suggest using the system with 2GB RAM. I guess it could be okay for basic typing. My ratings of using softwares:

Basic Windows operations: B; Media Player: A-; IE8: B+ (without sites with java); Firefox B; and Word 2003: A.

Device hardware is good. The speakers are okay for basic computer sounds, not music. The microphone is terrible. Display is very good. System build is plasticky – but for the money didn’t expect any better. Overall, the system is B-.

First off, let me tell you that I’m a technologist. I work in a very technical role and have also been in the security and networking consulting business for 10 years. When I needed a new hacktop, I was not looking seriously at this netbook (or any Netbook for that matter) due to the RAM limitations. However, after pulling the trigger, I’m very happy with this purchase with a few small, minor exceptions.

    1. It comes installed with Windows 7 Starter edition. I promptly wiped that drive and installed both Windows 7 Ultimate and Ubuntu.

    2. The 1GB of RAM that comes installed is not sufficient for my needs, so I upgraded to 2 – runs like a champ in both OS’s.

If you are just purchasing this to browse the web, check email, update our social networking accounts, etc… the 1GB and Win7 Starter should be fine.

The minor exceptions that I mentioned above are not cons, because they are easily changed by the end user. The one con that I can say has become a minor annoyance is the glossy case. Finger prints galore! If you suffer from slight (or significant) OCD, like I am you may have a problem with that. Again, not a huge deal and doesn’t impact my overall happiness of this purchase, but something that given the opportunity, I would smack the designers for.

DEFIANTLY not 8 hour life. 5 hours with “balanced” power setting. 6 hours before it shuts down with “power saver” setting. Still long enough for me, and maybe if i let it run down to 1% power before shut off it would last longer.
