Sony Vaio P Series VPCP115KG/D

  • Intel Atom Z540 1.86GHz processor
  • 2GB DDR2 memory
  • 64GB solid state hard drive
  • Intel Graphics Media Accelerator 500 graphics
  • Integrated Wireless LAN 802.11b/g/n
  • Windows 7 Home Premium

With a small footprint and wild colour schemes that include orange, green and pink, Sony’s Vaio P Series – the latest iteration of its chic and sexy ultraportable notebook line – is sure to be a head-turner in the boardroom.

At just over 600g, the P Series VPCP115KG/D can be easily slipped into bags and briefcases. Despite its svelte form, this well-constructed baby Vaio does not feel flimsy.

There are a number of clever features, such as mouse click buttons and a small touch-based trackpad on the display bezel for you to easily control the mouse cursor while holding the device with both hands.

However, the tiny trackpad, which is roughly as big as a 20-cent coin, is a hit-and-miss affair. I had to swipe my thumb a couple of times across it to move the cursor across the screen.

Keys are smaller than usual, but because they are well spaced, typing on them is fairly comfortable and accurate.

There are dedicated buttons on the keyboard for specific features: An Assist button activates the Vaio Care PC maintenance software and a Web button fires up the default Web browser in Windows or the Splashtop instant-on Web browser without booting up the operating system.

There is also a display resolution button which switches the 8-inch LED display’s resolution from 1,280 x 600 pixels to its native 1,600 x 768 pixels. While the higher resolution renders sharper text and images, I have to zoom in for greater reading comfort.

The display is gorgeous – sharp and vivid. A nice touch is the light sensor which adjusts screen brightness based on lighting conditions for optimal power consumption.

A built-in accelerometer changes the display orientation from landscape to portrait as you rotate the device.

There is another nifty use for the accelerometer: When viewing images, browsing webpages or reading e-books, simply tilt the machine left or right to scroll forward or backward. I could read an e-book from start to finish without hitting a single key.

Going by the PCMark05 computing benchmark that grills PCs on a plethora of computing tasks, the notebook scores 1,072 points – a so-so performance, but it is responsive enough for everyday use, thanks to its solid state drive which provides faster access compared to regular hard drives.

For tasks such as Web browsing and document editing, it lasts a good 3.5 hours on a single charge. With a larger battery, you can extend this to over eight hours.
